Nurture Your Soul

By: Vanessa J. Bonnette

Western cultures tend to measure success by accomplishment and progress defining people more by what they do than who they are. As a result, we've become so caught up in achieving in life that our soul is often neglected and deprived of the nurture it deserves and requires.

While there is nothing wrong with living a productive life, and being passionate about what you are doing, there is a danger you could find yourself trying to do more rather than enjoy life. Whenever you feel there are not enough hours in the day the first thing you can do is let go of guilt! Guilt robs you of peace and torments your mind. Take time to listen and connect with your soul and release any negative feelings.

It is absolutely vital that we take the time to listen to our soul. It is soul work that keeps us aware and grounded - conveying a sense of peace, perspective, insight, and understanding about who we are.

Soul connection is where we hear what our mind and body really needs. I would like to share with you some practices to experience authentic connection and soul expression.

Natural Nurture
Being outside enjoying the earth's creations is where I feel most satisfied. I sense a deep connection with my inner being and with the Divine. Be open to receiving the gifts that flow from nature. All you need to do is relax your mind and experience the world through your senses.

Most people have found that nature is a great way to ignite their senses and nurture their soul. No matter what we are experiencing in life, whether it is a death of a loved one, a financial crisis or just feeling a bit low, being with nature allows us to experience peace and tranquillity and gain a new perspective. Nature also provides abundant rejuvenating and restorative energies that are imperative to our survival.

Animal Affection
Modern research supports the fact that spending time with animals reduces stress and lowers blood pressure - the 'Pets as Therapy' programs are just one example. There is no denying how vital it is to connect to other living beings, and if positive human interaction isn't part of your daily routine, a pet may be one way that you can give and receive love and affection.

Animals invite us into a new world where we communicate beyond words in a different language. By communicating with animals using the languages of the body and soul they teach us a new way of being.

We can learn about unconditional love, about being loyal and devoted. Spending time with animals is also a great way to teach our children about values and responsibilities. You will be surprised at how many new things you discover!

Creative Expression
Expressing ourselves through the arts is a wonderful method of nurturing our soul. Whether it is via music, writing, painting or poetry - creative expression takes us beyond the mundane and into the imagination.

Whenever words are inadequate to capture or make sense of our feelings, we can usually show what we mean through colours and shapes. Used in this way art can be effective in understanding others - particularly young children.

Art can provide a means to open your inner knowing, bringing forth deeper wisdom, knowledge and healing.

Authentic connection and soul expression is limited only by your imagination!

Time for action!
Choose one day this week and schedule a time your nurture your soul. I suggest a minimum of 30 minutes.

Afterwards write about your experiences and express as many thoughts and feelings as possible.
