Market leading bread manufacturer addresses impact of family salt intake 3 February 2010 - Tip Top(r), market leaders and one of Australia’s largest names in bread is supporting Salt Awareness Week by helping consumers understand how they can check the salt content of their bread products.
“Being aware of salt levels in food is especially relevant with many kids returning to school. With the school sandwich making a long-awaited return to lunchboxes for both convenience and nutritious purposes, coupled with the underlying message of Salt Awareness Week, there has never been a better time to check the salt levels of your favourite brand of bread,” said Accredited Practising Dietitian Kathy Usic,
Nutrition Manager George Weston Foods.
George Weston Foods, one of the largest manufacturers of bread in Australia, has made a commitment to reduce salt levels across its entire Tip Top(r) bread range to 400mg/100g or less.
The company produces brands including Tip Top(r) Sunblest(r), Tip Top(r) Sunblest(r) UP(tm) and Tip Top(r) 9 Grain breads.
As a result of this initiative, over 342 tonnes of salt has been removed from the Australian food supply annually - a target achieved without any alteration to the great taste or quality of these breads.
“We recommend taking the following steps when selecting a bread to pack in the lunchbox,” advises Usic:
* Look at the nutrition information panel on your loaf of bread. The Heart
Foundation recommends that sodium levels should not exceed 400 milligrams per 100
grams.
* Check the fibre content of the bread to ensure it is providing at least
1.5g fibre per 2 slices.
