Media Release: Mum's the word on haemorrhoidsStudy reveals more than 50 per cent of women develop haemorrhoids during pregnancy1 Haemorrhoids is a medical condition rarely discussed among family or friends nor easily shared with medical practitioners, even by higher-risk groups such as pregnant women. A survey involving 302 people who have experienced haemorrhoids, found pregnancy is the number one cause of haemorrhoids (57%) followed by straining to pass bowel movements (30%). The study commissioned by Ego Pharmaceuticals, makers of haemorrhoid ointment SOOV IT, casts light on a health issue seldom discussed by pregnant women. Brand Manger of SOOV IT and new mother, Katarina Heath said "Developing hemorrhoids during pregnancy is quite common and it's important that women feel comfortable seeking advice from their doctor or local pharmacist". When respondents were asked for their main reason for deciding on a haemorrhoid treatment, 43 per cent selected recommendation from a pharmacist, 28 percent chose doctor's recommendation, while brand and method of use (applicator or no applicator) were both selected by 7 per cent. "On average, about three out of four women surveyed, self-selected their own haemorrhoid treatment1, which highlights the importance of the role of the pharmacist when it comes to gaining advice on the best possible product to suit your needs," Katarina said. Haemorrhoids can develop during the pregnancy and can be aggravated during the actual labour.2 Constipation is a common cause of haemorrhoids during pregnancy and occurs due to the extra pressure the growing uterus places on the bowel.2, 3 SOOV IT is the only haemorrhoid relief product with a measured dose applicator for a more consistent dose delivery. It contains hydrocortisone and lignocaine to reduce inflammation and relieve pain and itching. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare professional. Consult your doctor/pharmacist if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to become pregnant before use of this product.
