Alternative to Toxic Plastics for Australian Babies

With the current media focus on Bisphenol-A(BPA) in hard plastics, parents are growing increasingly concerned about which bottles they choose for their precious bubs. However, many have not given a thought to other places BPA may be lurking. This toxic substance can also be found in plastic baby bowls, food tubs, plastic pouches and the lining of cans of baby food and formula!

According to recent studies, metal cans are a significant source of human exposure to BPA. Many processed baby foods are packaged in cans, and although parents are switching to BPA-free bottles, many have not considered switching their bubs favourite meal or formula. "The most reliable way to avoid BPA from cans is to avoid using them at all. The breakdown of the plastic lining is greatly accelerated by acidic substances such as tomato. For many canned products, there are fresh or frozen alternatives," says Vom Saal, the scientist behind the most recent study into BPA. This study also noted that liquid ready-to-serve baby formulas contained much higher levels of BPA than powdered formula, even up to twenty times higher in some cases!

The major concern for nervous Australian parents is that BPA seems to be in many of the items their bub comes into contact with constantly. However, the good news is that there are new BPA-free products becoming available which fulfil busy parents needs, yet are safe for bubs including bottles, teething rings, dummies and food containers.

Australian company, Homestyle Nutrition, had great difficulty sourcing BPA-free bowls for its range of frozen baby food, Bub Grub. The company eventually sourced BPA free, polypropylene bowls from New Zealand based Tecpak. The bowls are adorable, as well as durable, dishwasher and microwave safe, but most importantly they are free of toxic chemicals. As a mother herself, Christie Walters, the Director of Homestyle Nutrition wanted to ensure that the plastic would be 100% safe. "We searched high and low to ensure we had the safest bowls available. Whilst our tubs are more expensive for us to buy than most other plastic products, I don’t think anyone can put a price on your bubs health."

With the best interests of Australian bubs at heart, it is little wonder that Bub Grub is gaining momentum as the premium baby food alternative. The fact that it is steamed, pureed and snap frozen ensures that it retains maximum nutrients and even tastes just like homemade. The meals are adored by Australian families, celebrity parents and health professionals. Australian model and busy mum of two, Chloe Maxwell loves the range. "When I discovered Bub Grub I was amazed at the quality and variety and not to mention the exact combinations of foods I was struggling with time in preparing for my children. Bub Grub is home cooked meals frozen for your convenience. My kids love them!"
