Reader's Question

Hello,

I am just wondering if you know of any support groups that are held in the Sydney area for woman who have had a caesarean?

My daughter is almost 7 months old and was born by emergency caesarean. I had a dream pregnancy and went into spontaneous labour. My labour was progressing very quickly and all was going extremely well. My OB broke my waters (the lining was so thin; they would have broken on their own very soon) and he saw a lot of meconium. My baby's heart rate was monitored and showed that it was rising and falling dramatically. The OB held off as long as he could before organising for me to have a caesarean.

I am still very, very emotional about the outcome and am keen to talk about it. I am now absolutely determined to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) for our next baby (won't be for a couple of years though).

Hoping you can assist.

Thanks so much!

Kirsti's Response

Hi,

Thanks for your email. It sounds as though you have been through a lot over the past 7 months, particularly on an emotional level with the birth of your daughter by emergency caesarean. As you know, a birth for one woman who considered it quite spiritual and wonderful - can be quite traumatic for another. When we place certain expectations around events in our life and when these expectations are not met, we may experience feelings of emptiness, fearfulness and some level of sadness. Particularly in your case, where you went through an emergency c-section and were not expecting it. Firstly, I just want to point out - what you are feeling is perfectly natural and normal and I acknowledge you for reaching out. Good on you! As I am pregnant again with my second child, I can totally empathise and connect with your position.

As I am a Life Coach and not a medical practitioner, I can work closely with you on how you are feeling right now, resolve any feelings from the experience and assist you to move forward in your life. You may also need to consult with your local doctor, midwife, maternity hospital, baby clinic or even conduct an online search to help you find a support group for women who have gone through a similar experience.

As a coach, I work with many mothers on different issues. From your email, it sounds like you are still experiencing some emotional difficulties from your experience. If you would like to contact me directly I would be more than happy to offer you a free phone coaching session. In this session, its a judgement free zone and confidential. My intention is to provide you with a safe, open space for you to talk freely and openly. Acknowledging what's really going on for you may just be the key to unlock your fears and to provide you with some new tools and strategies to help you move forward in your life.
