Reader's Question
My dog (Chiuaha/silky terrier) tends to keep away from my 17 month old (he is pretty scared of little kids) but recently he has started urinating on her toys and play things (outdoor mats and swings). How do I stop him from doing this?
Andrew's Response
It sounds like you may have a discipline issue with your little dog. If he had the run of the house before your child came along, he may now resent the competition for attention.
Always make sure you have well-defined boundaries for your dog. He should have his own play and sleep areas, and only be allowed to interact with you and your family when invited. If he breaks the rules, such as urinating on toys etc, he should be returned to his own area immediately. He will soon get the message that if he does the wrong thing, he will miss out on time with his family. We would also encourage you to let him spend some time outdoors by himself. If your child's toys are in this area, consider erecting a pen for your dog to play in, that is just his own area.
It may seem tough at first, but once your doggy friend understands his place in your family, you will be able to enjoy a happier and healthier family life.
